Surgutneftegas invests 154 bln rubles in environmental projects in five years - Bogdanov
MOSCOW. Jan 26 (Interfax) - Surgutneftegas has invested almost 154 billion rubles in environmental measures in the past five years, the head of the Russian oil company, Vladimir Bogdanov said during Ecology Day at the Russia exhibition and forum at VDNKh on Friday.
"The sustainability of production is one of Surgutneftegas' strategic objectives. Our company is annually increasing financing for environmental protection measures. Almost 154 billion rubles was spent on this in the past five years alone. We are acting in full compliance with Russia's environmental legislation and are implementing our own initiatives to protect the environment," Bogdanov said.
He noted the company's efforts to minimize the risks of oil spills. "For this we carefully control the quality of pipe products. We work with manufacturing plants. We fully ensure incoming inspection of pipes for construction and repair of oil pipelines and oil and gas pipelines. Furthermore, the company has a successfully operating plant to apply internal anti-corrosion coating on pipes and connectors. This is a unique facility, Surgutneftegas' pride. It makes it possible to significantly increase the safety of field pipelines," Bodanov said.
The company also actively processes production waste, he said. For example, it recycles all worn out automobile tires itself, fully treats oil sludge and does not use toxic reagents in drilling fluids, Bogdanov said.
He also noted the company's rational use of associated petroleum gas. "The company has held leading positions in the industry by level of associated petroleum gas use of over 99% for many years already. For this we have a gas processing plant, we're continuing to build small power plants. There are now 22 gas turbine power plants and seven gas engine power plants in operation. These facilities make it possible to use associated gas to generate electricity," Bogdanov said.
"In addition, gas is injected into formations using a compressor station, meaning it is used in the oil extraction process. And in order to fully extract valuable liquid hydrocarbons from gas, we use 24 low stage separation compressor stations," Bogdanov said.
He said Surgutneftegas recovers about 7 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Thanks to the development of this program, the company managed to reduce gross emissions of pollutants, including greenhouse gases, by more than 9% in 2023 compared to 2022. This is our contribution to the fight against global climate change," Bogdanov said.
