Russia's Agriculture Ministry supports extending increased duty on wine imports for 2024

MOSCOW. Nov 9 (Interfax) - Russia's Agriculture Ministry supports the proposal to extend the 20% duty on wine imports for 2024, Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev said on Thursday at the All-Russia Wine Forum in Moscow.

As was reported at the forum, the Union of Winegrowers and Winemakers of the Russian Federation has proposed the extension.

"In any case, we support the proposal to extend the measure after January 1, 2024," Patrushev said.

"We sell a lot of imported wine. We need to promote our domestic producers on the shelves, and we are ready to do this with you. I believe that any protective measures that we can initiate should be initiated so that we have as little imported wine remaining as possible," Patrushev said.

According to Patrushev, the protective measures in force in Russia incentivize developing the industry.

As reported, the government in July this year increased import duties on wine from unfriendly countries from 12.5% to 20%, though not less than $1.50 per liter.

The government took the decision as part of implementing a set of measures to respond to the actions of unfriendly countries. The decision is currently valid until the end of 2023.
