Putin acknowledges disagreements in CIS, but notes readiness to cooperate
ST. PETERSBURG. Dec 26 (Interfax) - The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries continue to cooperate despite disagreements between them and seek to resolve problematic issues jointly, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
"Unfortunately, I have to acknowledge that disagreements also arise amongst the member states of the Commonwealth. The main thing, however, is that we are ready and will cooperate, and even if any problematic issues arise, we seek to resolve them ourselves, together, jointly providing each other with friendly aid and intermediary assistance," he said, speaking at an informal CIS summit.
Putin also noted that by the end of this year Russia's trade with the CIS countries could reach $100 billion.
He thanked the CIS heads of state for coming to the informal meeting in St. Petersburg. "It was a common desire; we have repeatedly referred to it. But still formally it is Russia's initiative and I am grateful to you for its support," the Russian president said.
Putin also added that meetings like these, in an informal environment between the heads of the Commonwealth states "are usually very effective."
