Almost 900 Russian servicemen infected with coronavirus

MOSCOW. April 27 (Interfax) - Coronavirus has been detected in 874 Russian servicemen since March, with four of them being in serious condition, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"The comprehensive testing in the Russian Armed Forces held from March through April 26 revealed that 874 servicemen tested positive for coronavirus," the Defense Ministry said in a statement on its website.

A total of 314 people are now in military hospitals, 175 in isolation wards at their military bases, six in civilian hospitals, and 379 people are self-isolating at home, the ministry said.

All military personnel tested positive for coronavirus are under constant observation by military medics, it said.

"Of those, four people are in serious condition, including one on a ventilator, fifteen moderate cases, and the rest are asymptomatic cases," the Defense Ministry said.

Moreover, about 250 civilian employees of the Russian Armed Forces have been diagnosed with Covid-19, it said.

"As many as 245 civilian employees of the Russian Armed Forces are infected [with the coronavirus]," the ministry said.

Infected members of civilian staff of the Armed Forces are undergoing treatment in different places, including Russian military hospitals (25 patients) and civilian hospitals (33 patients), with 175 people being isolated in their homes and 12 in the Russian Defense Ministry's own health resorts.

In addition, 779 cadets and military students, and 192 professors of military schools have been diagnosed with coronavirus, the ministry said.

"As many as 304 people are being treated at the hospitals of the Russian Defense Ministry. A total of 354 people are undergoing treatment at isolation wards at their military units. Nine people are being treated at public healthcare institutions, while 112 people are isolated at home. Their health condition is normal, and without any symptomatic manifestations," the statement said.

The number of professors and students of pre-university military schools who were tested positive for Covid-19 reached 192, it said.

Of them, eight people are undergoing treatment at the hospitals of the Russian Defense Ministry, 15 at special wards for infected patients in the educational establishments, nine in public healthcare institutions, and 160 people at the holiday homes of the Russian Defense Ministry. "Their health condition is normal, and without any symptomatic manifestations," the statement said.

Military doctors are conducting comprehensive testing of servicemen and civilian personnel as test systems are supplied to the army, the ministry said.

All military units are involved in daily preventive events, while transport, service and living premises are disinfected, it said.

"A total of 5,554 control thermometry posts have been deployed, and rapid reaction monitoring teams have been formed. All personnel of the Armed Forces undergo mandatory medical examination, including temperature measurement, as soon as they arrive for service," it said.

In November 2017, the Russian president signed a decree setting the total number of the Russian Armed Forces at 1,902,758 people, including 1,013,628 servicemen. The remainder is civilian personnel.

It was reported on Sunday that Russia recorded 6,361 new Covid-19 cases, which brought the total number of cases to nearly 81,000.
