Tokayev calls on CIS colleagues to support work of International Organization for the Russian Language

ASTANA. Oct 9 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted the significance of the Russian language in the relations between the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), while saying careful treatment of the language and cultural diversity of the CIS states is important.

"It is important to note the huge significance of the Russian language in the relations between our countries. This language promotes mutual understanding, expansion of educational, scientific and interpersonal contacts. It's an indisputable fact. Therefore, I am asking my dear colleagues to support the work of the International Organization for the Russian Language," Tokayev said at the Friday meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council in Turkmenistan.

"This organization has good prospects. I am sure of that, bearing in mind that some 300 million people worldwide speak this language to various degrees," Tokayev said.

"At the same time, it is extremely important to keep careful treatment of the language and cultural diversity of the CIS states, to show due respect of the history, traditions, and culture of all peoples, and also to look for more effective forms of cooperation in the humanitarian sphere to bring our peoples closer," Tokayev said.
