Yerlan Karin appointed vice-president of Kazakhstan - decree

ASTANA. Aug 31 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has appointed Yerlan Karin vice-president of Kazakhstan, the presidential press service said.

"Yerlan Karin Tynymbaiuly shall be appointed vice-president of the Republic of Kazakhstan, he shall be relieved of his earlier post," the presidential decree said.

The Kurultai have its consent to Karin's appointment to the post of vice-president of Kazakhstan earlier on Monday.

Tokayev also hosted Karin after his appointment to the post of vice-president.

The president also set Karin a number of specific tasks.

"In particular, the vice-president was ordered to ensure presentation of the president's position in interaction with the Kurultai, the government and other state agencies on key state policy issues," the presidential press service said.

Karin, 50, was first deputy head of the presidential administration. In different years, he was the president's adviser and aide and state secretary.

The new Constitution adopted at a referendum took effect in Kazakhstan on July 1, 2026. Among its main novelties is the introduction of the post of vice-president of Kazakhstan.

Under the Constitution, the vice-president is appointed by the country's president with the consent of the Kurultai, expressed in a majority of its members' votes.

The vice-president represents the president in interaction with the Kurultai, the government and other state agencies and exercises other powers determined by the president.

If the president leaves his post early or dies, the powers of the president go to the vice-president before an election.
