Tokayev notes unprecedentedly high level of Kazakhstan-U.S. relations

ASTANA. Aug 25 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has noted the unprecedentedly high level of relations between Astana and Washington owing to the constructive and trusting dialogue between the two countries' leaders, the Kazakh presidential press service said in a statement.

"Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that owing to the constructive and trusting dialogue with U.S. President Donald Trump, relations between the two countries have reached an unprecedented high level," the statement said following a meeting between Tokayev and a delegation from the U.S. House of Representatives.

The U.S. delegation included Chairman of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee Jason Smith, U.S. Congress members Greg Murphy, Carol Miller, Ronny Jackson, Wesley Bell and Ed Case.

The parties noted the rapid development of Kazakh-American partnership, particularly in trade, economy, and investment, advanced technology, science, education, and culture.

The meeting participants also discussed cooperation between the two countries in the multilateral format. Specifically, Kazakhstan's support for American initiatives to promote global and regional stability, including the Board of Peace and the Abraham Accords, as well as the role of Kazakhstan and the United States in fostering nuclear safety and the non-proliferation regime was underscored.

Jason Smith, who led the American delegation, said that he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump before the meeting with Tokayev.

"At two o'clock this morning, President Donald Trump called me. I told him that in a few hours I would be meeting with you. He asked me to convey his warmest wishes and expressed his appreciation for the trusting and constructive relationship that has developed between you," Smith said, adding that Trump has also conveyed that he is looking forward to Tokayev's visit to Miami to participate in the G20 summit.

One of the main goals of the American delegation's visit is to explore opportunities for further expanding economic ties between the U.S. and Kazakhstan, he said.

"We are firmly committed to substantive dialogue to strengthen bilateral cooperation. Our President considers this extremely important," Smith noted.

Tokayev expressed confidence that his upcoming visit to Miami will give a fresh impetus to the development of the expanded strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and the U.S.

Tokayev also informed U.S. Congress members about the first elections to the unicameral Kurultai held on August 23, calling them a historic event that marked a new era in the country's political modernization.

"A constructive and substantive dialogue between members of the U.S. Congress and the Kurultai is important for further deepening mutual understanding, promoting common priorities and strengthening the Kazakh-American partnership," Tokayev said.

He also briefed the Congress members on the main provisions of the new Kazakh Constitution and the political and socioeconomic reforms being implemented in the country.

As reported, Tokayev will take part in the G20 summit, which will take place in Miami in December, at the invitation of the U.S. president.
