Russia's nuclear power plants produce 129.6 bln kWh of electricity since start of 2026, peaking over summer as normal - Rosatom CEO

MOSCOW. Aug 7 (Interfax) - Russia's nuclear power plants (NPPs) have produced 129.6 billion kWh of electricity since the beginning of this year, 7.8% above the target set by the Federal Anti-Monopoly Service (FAS), Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev said in a commentary in the Strana Rosatom corporate publication.

"Currently, during the summer utilization peak, Russian NPPs are working as normal. Production is stable and safety requirements are being executed fully. Of course, hot weather always requires the operating organization pay more attention to cooling regimes. But this is more like a usual seasonal factor for us," Likhachev said.

He said that Russian NPPs were designed and used taking into account a wide range of climatic conditions, including extreme conditions.

"We have technical solutions and corresponding operating experience. And even in abnormally high temperatures, the plants continue to function reliably and safely at 100% of their specified capacity," Likhachev said.

Rosatom has expertise in building and operating NPPs in the most varied climatic zones, he said.

"We have the Kola, Bilibino and the floating NPP in the north, as well as projects in moderate climates; there are plants and projects for hot, drought-prone regions, for example El Dabaa in Egypt. Each one of these products was initially developed for a specific site - taking into account air temperature, hydrology, wind levels and the specificities of water supply, seismic conditions and other natural factors," he said.

The company said that Russia's NPPs had produced 218.35 kWh of electricity in 2025.

Likhachev said in July that Rosatom planned to exceed the government electricity production target of 214 kWh or more in 2026.
