Moldova's external public debt rises 0.5% to $4.84 bln in H1
CHISINAU. July 28 (Interfax) - Moldova's external public debt rose 0.5% or $26.1 million to $4.84 billion during the first half 2026, the Finance Ministry said.
The debt decreased by 1.2% in Q2 after rising 1.9% in Q1 2026.
Net borrowing from abroad totaled $136 million in H1 2026, with a weaker dollar rate against the euro reducing public debt by $109.9 million.
Moldova's main creditors were the International Monetary Fund with $1.3 billion, a 3% decrease over the first half of the year; the International Development Association with $903.9 million, down 2.1%; the European Union with $937.7 million, up 22.8%; European Investment Bank with $450.8 million, down 6.7%; the World Bank with $382.1 million, down 1.5% decrease; and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development with $225 million, a 10.7% decrease.
France accounted for $234.2 million of bilateral external public debt, a 3% decrease, Japan for $125.2 million, down 4.3%, and Canada for $84.6 million, down 3.4%.
Moldova's external public debt grew 14.8% in 2025, 13.4% in 2024, 17.7% in 2023 and 25.3% in 2022.
