Rosatom, Egypt discussing construction of new nuclear power units, including small, floating ones - Rosatom head
MOSCOW. July 9 (Interfax) - Rosatom and Egypt are discussing the construction of new nuclear power units in the African country, including small and floating ones, Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev told reporters.
"Today, the government is discussing the creation of new units with us; additional ones contracted under the El Dabaa project, and joint work on small, including floating, nuclear power plants, as well as creating centers of nuclear medicine," Likhachev said.
Likhachev also confirmed previously announced plans to supply nuclear fuel to the El Dabaa NPP, which is under construction in Egypt, in 2027, specifying that this will take place in the first half of the year, as well as the timeline for connecting the first power unit to the grid in 2028.
"Our task is to gradually connect the units to the grid starting from 2028 through 2030," he said.
The El Dabaa NPP project involves the construction of four power units of 1,200 MW each.
Egypt is holding negotiations with Rosatom on the possible construction of a small-capacity NPP in the country and will make a decision based on its needs, Egyptian Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat told Interfax in 2025 on the sidelines of World Atomic Week.
