Tajikistan, South Korea's KNR discuss railway projects, metro construction in Dushanbe

DUSHANBE. July 2 (Interfax) - Representatives of the Tajik Ministry of Transport and South Korea's state-owned Korea National Railway (KNR) discussed developing cooperation in rail transport, implementing joint investment projects, and preparing for the Dushanbe metro project, the Ministry of Transport's press service reported.

As noted, preliminary work on the Dushanbe metro project was positively assessed during a meeting between Tajik Transport Minister Azim Ibrohim and KNR International Cooperation Department Executive Director Yoon Hak-soon, and no further details were provided in the statement.

The ministry noted that four projects are currently being implemented in Tajikistan's transport sector with the support and technical assistance of the Republic of Korea, three of which are in the final stages. Investment volumes for the projects were not specified.

On July 1, 2024, the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan and KNR signed a memorandum of cooperation in the transport sector.

Tajikistan's authorities announced their intention to begin construction of the first metro in Tajikistan in early 2025. The first line of the Dushanbe light rail is planned to run from the southern outskirts of the city to the State Circus, extending 10.5 kilometers.
