EAEU processing several applications for observer status, including that from Nicaragua - Russian Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW. June 19 (Interfax) - The Eurasian Economic Union is processing a package of applications for the observer status, including that from Nicaragua, the newspaper Izvestia said on Friday, citing Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin.
"The EAEU is preparing to broaden the range of partners. Currently, five member states, namely, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia are processing a package of applications from potential observers," the newspaper said.
"There is a number of applications for the observer status, they are being considered in accordance with the Eurasian Economic Union procedure. As known, a consensus, agreement of all five members, is required," Pankin told Izvestia.
This is a non-voting format, but it allows attending meetings of EAEU bodies by invitation. In fact, it's a preliminary stage of integration, in which one can appreciate all union benefits from within, Izvestia said.
Approval of the applications will ensure a smooth transition to the EAEU: the applicants will be able to study the rules of the common market in detail, develop joint economic projects, and strengthen contacts. An application from Nicaragua is on the EAEU's table, Izvestia said.
"Nicaragua is not the only one, it is part of the application package. We shall see what happens next and will have discussions with our partners," Pankin told Izvestia.
