Terms of electricity transit from Azerbaijan to Turkey through Georgia to come into force in 2027

BAKU. May 20 (Interfax) - The terms of transit of electricity from Azerbaijan through Georgia will come into force on January 1, 2027, according to a statement from the Georgian State Electrosystem (GSE) on LinkedIn.

"As part of the government's official visit to Baku, the general director of GSE, Vano Zardiashvili, and the president of SOCAR [the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic], Rovshan Najaf, signed an agreement on the main terms for providing electricity transmission services. According to the agreement, the parties determined the key terms of electricity transmission, which will come into force on January 1, 2027," GSE said.

It specifies that electricity transit will be carried out from Azerbaijan to Turkey through Georgian territory, and the agreement will be valid for 20 years.

In addition, the document sets the transit tariff for the first three years in advance, which, it is noted, will contribute to improved budgetary and system planning.

"The agreement will strengthen Georgia's legal and financial role as a transit country, make a significant contribution to the development of the regional energy corridor, and create a foundation for long-term regional cooperation and stable partnership," GSE said.

In turn, the Azerbaijani Economy Ministry said that to implement intergovernmental agreements signed on May 18 in Baku during the Georgian delegation's visit, the relevant state energy companies of the two countries signed the Main Terms, defining the key commercial parameters of future contracts, which must be concluded no later than October 15, 2026.

According to the ministry, this concerns intergovernmental agreements on natural gas supplies to Georgia, the continuation of transit arrangements for additional supplies of Azerbaijani gas to international markets, electricity supplies to Georgia and the transit of electricity to Turkey through Georgian territory, as well as a protocol of the Coordination Council confirming the final acceptance and completion of modernization work as part of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project.
