Tajikistan signs $8 bln in investment contracts with China

DUSHANBE. May 12 (Interfax) - Tajik companies have signed over 50 contracts with Chinese investors totaling $8 billion, the press service of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon reported following his visit to Beijing.

"Following the meeting and negotiations between Tajik and Chinese companies, more than 50 cooperation documents were signed, which are expected to attract over $8 billion to Tajikistan," according to the statement.

As noted, Rahmon met with representatives of major Chinese companies and invited them to invest in the development of the Tajik economy. The president noted Tajikistan's hydroelectric potential, which ranks eighth in the world. Rahmon also emphasized the country's rich mineral resources, including rare minerals and strategically important metals such as gold, silver, copper, lithium, antimony, zinc, and tungsten.

Furthermore, Tajikistan is interested in attracting investment to develop transport corridors linking China and South Asian countries with the Middle East. Rahmon also noted the potential for establishing joint ventures in mining and processing industries, metallurgy, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, light industry, agriculture, and logistics.

According to the press service, over 300 public investment projects totaling approximately $13 billion are currently being implemented in Tajikistan, with several projects being implemented by Chinese contractors. More than 700 companies with Chinese capital operate in Tajikistan across various economic sectors.

Chinese investment in the Tajik economy currently exceeds $6 billion, including direct investment of $3.5 billion. China invested $900 million in Tajikistan's economy in 2025, or 12.5% of total foreign investment attracted by Tajikistan.
