Gas consumption in Russia reaches all-time high for month of April - Gazprom

MOSCOW. May 4 (Interfax) - Gas consumption in Russia during April's chilly weather this year set an all-time high for the month, Gazprom said.

"Gazprom supplied Russians with a record volume of gas from the Unified Gas Supply System for the month of April. Consumers received 31.3 billion cubic meters of gas. The previous record for April was 30.5 bcm in 2025," the company said.

"Demand spiked owing to the cold weather. As noted, supplies were the highest from April 19 to 30," Gazprom said.

The temperature is the main factor determining gas consumption and, consequently, sales, particularly during the heating season. A frosty start to the year provides a boost to production for the entire following year. The weather, which has a significant effect on energy consumption, was definitely a factor in the reporting month. The System Operator of the Unified Energy System notes that the average temperature in Russia in April this year was two degrees Celsius lower than the previous year and one degree below the climatic norm.

The Unified Gas Supply System (UGSS) is Gazprom's network of main gas pipelines that spans the European part of Russia and Siberia to the Altai and Kuzbass regions. Autonomous gas transmission systems, which will eventually be connected to the UGSS, currently supply gas further east.
