Shiveluch volcano in Russia's Kamchatka spews ash 10.6 km above sea level
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. April 1 (Interfax) - The Shiveluch volcano erupting in Kamchatka spewed ash 10.6 kilometers above sea level in the small hours of Wednesday, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team of the Volcanology and Seismology Institute of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences said.
"The ash plume billowed 184 kilometers east of the volcano five kilometers above the ground," the statement said.
Aviation code orange was issued for Shiveluch, the activity of which endangers local flights.
Shiveluch is the northernmost active volcano of Kamchatka, situated 45 kilometers from Klyuchi in the Ust-Kamchatsk district with a population of about 5,000. This is one of the largest volcanos in Kamchatka. It is 60,000 to 70,000 years old.
