Russia interested in uranium mining project in Namibia

MOSCOW. March 17 (Interfax) - Russia has expressed interest in participating in a project to develop the Wings uranium deposit in Namibia and in cooperating with the African country on nuclear energy, the Russian government's press service reported after a meeting of the Russian-Namibian intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation.

Russia is also prepared to cooperate in the area of geology and mineral resource use, the press release said.

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said in January that it and Namibia had considered prospects for cooperation on nuclear energy, including working together on uranium deposits, and discussed preparations for the signing of a framework intergovernmental agreement.

Rosatom was earlier invited to participate in joint mining projects by a representative of another African country, Niger Mines Minister Ousmane Abarchi. He said the country has substantial uranium resource, particularly in northern regions, where total reserves exceed 5,000 tonnes.

In 2025, Rosatom launched a pilot facility at the Mkuju River uranium project in Tanzania, one of the most promising in the world. The deposit has explored uranium reserves of more than 44,000 tonnes, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev said.
