Size of biotechnology market in Russia amounts to 440 bln - 450 bln rubles in 2025, at level of 2024 - industry and trade minister
MOSCOW. Feb 25 (Interfax) - The Russian biotechnology market is estimated to have been approximately 440 billion to 450 billion rubles in 2025, which corresponds to the level of the previous year, Industry and Trade Minister Anton Alikhanov told journalists on the sidelines of the Future Technologies Forum.
"The market last year was around 440 billion to 450 billion rubles. It remained approximately the same [as in 2024]," Alikhanov said, noting that approximately 230 companies currently operate in the biotech sector in Russia.
Russia's share in the global biotechnology market is 0.4%-0.5%, Alikhanov said.
Regarding the domestic market, the share of Russian companies is currently insufficiently high, he said. "To put it mildly, we have a lot to import-substitute in terms of vitamins, and in general, in all areas," he said.
During his speech at the plenary session of the Future Technologies Forum, President Vladimir Putin instructed the government to work out measures to stimulate the Russian biotechnology market and mechanisms to protect it from imported analogues. In a conversation with journalists, Alikhanov said that this primarily concerns methods of technical regulation and the development of domestic standards.
The Technological Support for Bioeconomics national project, designed to last until 2030, was approved in December, and its implementation began this year. It aims to increase technological independence for bioeconomy products to 40% by 2030, increase production in this area 96%, and raise the share of domestic biotechnological products in the consumption structure to 55%.
According to the ministry's materials, 20 billion rubles will be allocated for implementing the national project until 2030. The potential size of the market by 2030 is over 700 billion rubles.
Speaking at the Bioprom forum in October 2025, Industry and Trade Minister Anton Alikhanov said that the ministry forecasts the growth of bioeconomy turnover in Russia at a faster rate than laid out in the national project developed by the government, which assumes a doubling of turnover by 2036, to 1 trillion rubles.
