Potato imports to Ukraine up 431% in 2025

MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax) - Ukraine imported 138,410 tonnes of potatoes in January-December 2025, showing a 5.3-fold, or a 431.3% increase compared with 26,050 tonnes imported in 2024, Ukrainian media reported, citing the Ukrainian State Customs Service data.

In money terms, Ukraine's potato imports increased 4.9-fold, or 391.9%, to $74.82 million in 2025 compared with $15.21 million in 2024, according to the data. Ukraine mainly imported potatoes from Poland (38.2%), Egypt (14.1%), and the Netherlands (10.8%).

Ukraine exported 2,380 tonnes of potatoes in 2025, down 11.2% from 2,680 tonnes in 2024. At the same time, despite the physical reduction in export volumes, Ukrainian potato sales abroad were more profitable in money terms and brought 3.1% ($584,000) more revenue than in 2024 ($566,000). The main customers were Moldova (60.2% of all exports), Azerbaijan (35.4%), and Georgia (1.2%).

As reported, Ukraine saw a potato crop failure due to drought, extremely high temperatures and a shortage of seed material in the 2024 season.

Ukraine's tomato imports rose 32.5% YoY to 104,820 tonnes in 2025 and cucumbers up 46.3% to 70,820 tonnes over the reporting period, media reports said.

The statistics said tomato imports went up 31.6% in value to $140.84 million last year, and cucumbers up 38.8% to $89.14 million.

Ukraine imported tomatoes mainly from Turkey (82.3% of all shipments in value), Poland (7.3%), and the Netherlands (1.9%) in 2025. Turkey (83.5%), Romania (7.6%) and Poland (4.6%) are the three largest cucumber suppliers to Ukraine.

Turkey (77.3%), Poland (10.9%) and the Netherlands (4.3%) were the main tomato suppliers to Ukraine a year ago, while Turkey (73.6%), Poland (11.8%) and Romania (4.9%) were the top cucumber suppliers. Hence, Turkey has largely consolidated its leading positions in both segments by late 2025.

Ukraine's tomato exports totaled 553 tonnes in 2025, which is 31.2% less than in 2024. In 2025, tomatoes were bought by Moldova (61.5%), Poland (34.1%) and Romania (1.1%), while in 2024 Moldova was the main buyer (86%).

Ukrainian cucumber supplies to foreign markets surged 19.7% to 3,760 tonnes in 2025. Poland (54.5%), Estonia (36.4%) and Moldova (7.5%) were the main customers. The top three customers were the same a year ago, but with a different distribution of shares, in particular, Estonia accounted for 50.6% of the delivered volumes, Poland for 32.6%, and Moldova for 9.3%.

As reported, in July 2025, Ukraine imposed anti-dumping duties on imports of fresh cucumbers and tomatoes from Turkey in the amount of 20.1% and 26.9%, respectively, for five years. These measures were applied to protect Ukrainian producers from dumping imports, which harmed domestic greenhouses.
