Macron announces detention of tanker coming from Russia in Mediterranean

PARIS. Jan 22 (Interfax) - The French Navy has conducted an operation in the Mediterranean with respect to an oil tanker coming from Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday.

"The French Navy boarded an oil tanker coming from Russia, subject to international sanctions and suspected of flying a false flag," Macron wrote on X.

An investigation has been started, Macron said. "The vessel has been diverted," he said.

"We are determined to uphold international law and to ensure the effective enforcement of sanctions," he said.

The French personnel acted in line with international law, he said.
