Russia sees potential for increasing energy exports to Malaysia, building nuclear plants - Deputy PM

KUALA LUMPUR. Oct 27 (Interfax) - Russia could increase exports of energy resources, industrial equipment and agricultural products to Malaysia and consider building small- and large-capacity nuclear power plants in the country.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Fadillah Yusof discussed issues concerning bilateral cooperation at a meeting on Monday on the sidelines of the 20th East Asia Summit being held as part of the ASEAN summit.

"The Russian side sees good opportunities for increasing shipments of energy resources, pharmaceuticals, and industrial equipment, including medical, to Malaysia. There is export potential for various types of agricultural products, foremost grain, as well as livestock products," Overchuk's press service reported after the meeting.

"Cooperation in the field of nuclear energy is a promising area. Russia is prepared to offer Malaysia its solutions for construction of large-capacity NPPs and small modular reactors on its territory," the press release said.

The parties noted the significant potential for increasing and diversifying bilateral trade, which grew by 32.1% year-on-year to $2.47 billion in the first eight months of 2025.

Overchuk "highly valued Kuala Lumpur's constructive approach to promoting the Russia-ASEAN dialog, stressing that the deepening of cooperation with the association remains a constant priority in the development of Russian foreign economic relations," the release said.
