Kazakhstan to cover electricity deficit in autumn-winter with imports from Russia, Uzbekistan - KEGOC

ASTANA. Oct 16 (Interfax) - The electricity deficit expected in Kazakhstan during the autumn-winter period of 2025-2026 will be covered by imports from Russia and Uzbekistan, said Nabi Aitzhanov, CEO of Kazakh grid operator KEGOC.

"In accordance with the developed balances, a deficit in both electrical energy and capacity is expected from October 2025 to March 2026," Aitzhanov said on Thursday at a meeting of the Samruk-Kazyna Public Council.

He said that with a forecast maximum load of 17.6 GW, the maximum generation from power plants would be about 16.7 GW. The capacity deficit is forecast at 0.9 GW.

"A monthly electricity deficit is expected to range from 125 million kWh to 330 million kWh. The total deficit during the autumn-winter period may exceed 1 billion kWh," Aitzhanov said.

He said that covering the electricity and capacity deficit was planned through imports from the interconnected power systems of Russia and Uzbekistan.

As of July 1, 2025, the main shareholder of KEGOC with 85% was the Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna, while another 6.93% was owned by the Unified Accumulative Pension Fund.
