Number of Ukrainians seeking asylum in Germany increases dramatically

MOSCOW. Oct 15 (Interfax) - The number of Ukrainians seeking asylum in Germany has increased significantly in recent weeks, the Ukrainian media reported, citing Die Welt as saying.

As noted, this is due to the lifting of the travel ban for Ukrainian men aged 18 to 22 who are fit for military service, which has resulted in a sharp increase in the number of asylum requests from this group.

"The number of requests has increased from around 100 per week before these regulations came into force to around 1,000 per week," a German Federal Interior Ministry spokesperson said. "As of now, it is impossible to assess how temporary this phenomenon is," she said.

The total number of immigrants from Ukraine in Germany rose during the summer. In total, 7,961 Ukrainians were registered through the Free registration system in May, 11,277 in August, and 18,755 in September, the German Interior Ministry said.
