External attacks on communications satellites becoming deliberate, regular - Russian operator

MOSCOW. Oct 2 (Interfax) - Artificial interference and the jamming of communications satellites are becoming regular and deliberate, Alexei Volin, CEO of Russian Satellite Communications Company, the state-owned satellite communications operator, said.

"There is quite a new requirement for satellites that stems from external action attempts and a new trend that we are observing. It is increasing attention to counteracting jamming and artificial interference," Volin said at the Satcomrus 2025 international conference of satellite communications operators in Moscow on Thursday.

"It seemed to be almost accidental about ten years ago. Unfortunately, this phenomenon has been taking on an absolutely continuous, regular and deliberate nature over the past few years," he said.

"The ability to suppress jamming is today becoming one of the requirements, which we also apply to the future satellite constellation that we are developing," he said.

On April 3, Volin said that a hardware and software suite protecting Russian satellites from attacks had been commissioned.

On March 14, 2023, Volin said that attempts were being made from "the adjacent territory" to create interference for the Russian satellite constellation. He also said that Russia would develop a hardware and software suite to detect targeted satellite jamming and counter the interference.
