Gazprom plans to sign important documents with Chinese partners during Putin's visit to China - Ushakov

MOSCOW. Aug 29 (Interfax) - Gazprom plans to sign important documents with Chinese partners during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said.

A ceremony to sign documents will take place in an expanded format after the talks on September 2, he said.

"It will mainly be emphasized that important documents will be signed by Gazprom and China National Petroleum Corporation [CNPC]. In total, some 20 agreements will be signed, some of them are still under consideration," he said.

"Three documents will be signed. I will not announce them, they will be signed at a meeting in an expanded format, and they will be officially announced in the presence of journalists," he said.

The three documents are connected with Gazprom, Ushakov said.

The supply of Russian gas to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline began in 2019 under a long-term contract to buy and sell gas between Gazprom and CNPC. The supplies have been going with an excess of the annual contractual obligations annually since 2020. A total of 31.12 billion cubic meters of gas was exported via the pipeline in 2024. In the first eight months of 2025, the supplies of natural gas to China increased by 28%. On December 1, 2024 - one month ahead of the planned date - daily supplies via the Power of Siberia reached a maximal contractual level (38 billion cubic meters in annual terms).

A project to build the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline is now being discussed. It envisages the supply to China of up to 50 billion cubic meters of gas a year from the Western Siberian resources. The period of implementation depends on the signing of a contact between Gazprom and China's CNPC, the talks on it are still underway. The construction of a gas pipeline called East Union via Mongolia, which will become a continuation of Power of Siberia 2, is being discussed.
