Russian Duma speaker meets with Chinese president

BEIJING. Aug 26 (Interfax) - Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday.

Volodin conveyed Russian President Vladimir Putin's greetings and warmest regards to Xi.

Volodin also informed Xi about the results of the tenth meeting of the Inter-parliamentary Commission for Cooperation between Russia's Federal Assembly and the National People's Congress of China held in Beijing today.

"It is important for us to take all necessary steps to provide the legislative groundwork for the decisions adopted at the level of heads of state. This issue was addressed at the meeting of our inter-parliamentary commission. We are discussing matters that are relevant to the development of relations between the two states," Volodin said.

The Chinese president, in turn, noted the contribution made by Volodin and members of the Russian State Duma "to the development of Chinese-Russian relations and bilateral cooperation," which "the Chinese side highly values".

"We should continue the traditional friendship between our countries, improve exchanges and interaction between our legislatures and in other areas," Xi said.

He also gave high marks to the results of the inter-parliamentary commission's meeting.

"The legislative bodies of the two countries work very closely together to help implement the agreements. You have also been making a major contribution to the development of bilateral relations," Xi said.

A Russian parliamentary delegation led by Volodin is paying an official visit to China. Volodin earlier met with Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress Zhao Leji.
