Putin, Trump ready to discuss most complicated issues, solve them through dialogue - Peskov

MOSCOW. Aug 14 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump have the political will to resolve existing issues through dialogue, which cannot be said about European leaders, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Thursday.

"In this, we are working on the premise of the good political will displayed by the two countries' presidents, in order to resolve issues through dialogue. This kind of mutual political will is currently in short supply. We can see that we are probably unlikely to hear an adequate response from, for example, Europeans," Peskov said.

"President Putin and President Trump intend to talk and will discuss the most complicated issues," he said.

Asked whether a possible swap of lands between Russia and Ukraine would be discussed at the talks in Anchorage, as media outlets have recently reported, Peskov said, "Obviously, they will be discussing issues related to a Ukrainian [conflict] settlement. The substance is very complex, very multifaceted."

Peaceful initiatives in the context of Ukraine settlement will be discussed in the framework of the Russian-U.S. summit now, Peskov said.

"We are now talking about discussions between Russia and the United States. What you are asking probably concerns the following stages. We are now talking about a top-level Russian-U.S. meeting," Peskov said, replying to whether the position of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is important in the discussions on peaceful initiatives.

The signals exchanged between Moscow and Washington during U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff's visit to Russia allowed the parties to quickly agree on holding a summit, Peskov said.

"By itself, Witkoff's last visit to Moscow was productive, quite fruitful. We exchanged signals, which allowed us to reach such a high-level meeting. Let's see how the conversation between the two presidents goes further," he told reporters.

He also said that preparations for the summit took place "in a very short time."

"Nevertheless, it was completed, all the required parameters were met," Peskov added.

Peskov urged not to try to predict the results of the Russian-U.S. summit in Alaska.

"Of course, it would be a big mistake to try to get ahead of ourselves and try to predict the results," he told reporters.

It is not planned to sign any documents at the summit, Peskov said.

"No, not expected, no preparations have been made, and it is unlikely that there will be any document," he told reporters.

"Bearing in mind that there will be a joint press conference, the president, of course, will outline the range of agreements, understandings that will be achieved," Peskov said.
