Putin notes rising unemployment trend in Russia, calls for proactive response

MOSCOW. Aug 12 (Interfax) - Unemployment in Russia, including hidden unemployment, is increasing but remains at historically low levels, President Vladimir Putin said.

"We are observing some growth in hidden unemployment figures, meaning workers in so-called idle status, those working part-time or at risk of dismissal," he said during a meeting on economic issues on Tuesday.

At the beginning of the year, this group numbered around 98,000 people; by the end of June, it reached 153,000 and as of August 8, the figure rose to 199,000, Putin said.

"Registered unemployment has also increased slightly. At the start of the year, it stood at approximately 274,000 people, by the end of June it was 291,000, and in early August, it was 300,000," he said.

"Nevertheless, it remains at record-low levels. Currently, it's 2%. This is essentially a historical minimum, but we must still sense these trends, recognize them, and respond appropriately to prevent economic overcooling," Putin said.
