Deliveries of Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Turkey will soon almost double - Turkish Energy Ministry
BAKU. Aug 8 (Interfax) - Deliveries of Azerbaijani gas to Syria are carried out on a commercial basis, and at the second stage these supplies will be increased to 6 million cubic meters per day, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said.
"At present, 3.4 million cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas are supplied to Syria daily. The capacity of the gas pipeline through which Azerbaijani gas is delivered to Syria via Turkey is 6 million cubic meters per day. As part of the second stage, we plan to increase this figure from 3.4 million to 6 million cubic meters per day," Bayraktar said on Friday in a live broadcast on the AHaber television channel.
Gas produced in Azerbaijan enters Turkey, into the gas transmission system of the Turkish state company Botas, and under a swap agreement concluded between Turkey and Azerbaijan, the gas is handed over to the Syrian side at the Turkey-Syria border in the Yavuzlu area, he said.
"Natural gas coming from Azerbaijan is exported to Syria. And this is not about gratuitous aid. Azerbaijan has undertaken an obligation to supply gas and sells it to Syria. Turkey is responsible for delivering and transporting this gas and ensures the necessary logistics. In addition, the Qatar Development Fund provides financing for this project. This therefore also involves certain commercial activity," Bayraktar said.
Before organizing these pipeline supplies, in April the Turkish side considered the possibility of delivering liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Syria by sea, followed by regasification and feeding it into the network, he said.
"However, we concluded that this could only be a medium-term project, since Syria's infrastructure does not yet allow for its implementation," he said.
As reported, on August 2, 2025, Azerbaijan began exporting gas to Syria. At the initial stage, supplies will amount to 1.2 billion cubic meters per year, with a subsequent increase to 2 bcm per year.
Azerbaijani gas will be delivered through the Turkish city of Kilis to power plants in Aleppo and Homs and used for electricity generation. As a result, power generation capacity of 1.2-1.3 GW will be ensured. The project is expected to increase electricity supply in the provinces to 10 hours per day. It will also make it possible to provide electricity to around 5 million households.
The Syrian government and the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic signed a memorandum of understanding in Baku on July 14, which includes cooperation and coordination in the energy sector, supplies of natural gas via Turkey, as well as cooperation and coordination in oil exploration.
