Ukrainian govt appoints Economic Security Bureau director

MOSCOW. Aug 6 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian government has appointed Alexander Tsivinsky to the post of director of the Economic Security Bureau in line with its decision adopted at a meeting on Wednesday, Ukrainian media outlets quoted Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko as saying on social media.

"After the decision of the selection commission, proper checks, and the passing of a polygraph test, there are no reservations regarding his candidacy," Sviridenko said.

The government is expecting the Economic Security Bureau to update its operations, strengthen this institution and achieve a significant level of trust between the bureau and Ukrainian entrepreneurs, she said.

"It is important that economic relations in Ukraine are not distorted by shadowy schemes and that business can count on respect and cooperation from the state," Sviridenko said.

Prior to this appointment, Tsivinsky headed the National Anti-Corruption Bureau's detective department.

As reported, the selection commission initially recommended Tsivinsky as a candidate for the post of Economic Security Bureau director to the government on June 25. Tsivinsky received the votes of three foreign members of the commission, while its Ukrainian members supported the two other candidates, Mikhail Burtovoi and Oleg Borisenko.

The government, which had ten days to approve the candidates, reviewed these options on July 7 and, in accordance with a letter from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), asked the commission to again submit no more than two candidates who would meet all of the set requirements, including security ones.

The selection commission repeatedly submitted Tsivinsky's candidacy to the government on July 23.

In response to Tsivinsky's inquiry, the SBU later officially confirmed the absence any grounds able to hinder his appointment as director of the Economic Security Bureau.

Sviridenko said on August 1 that Tsivinsky had agreed to take a polygraph test before his appointment.

According to media reports, Ukraine's Western partners have said on a number of occasions that the appointment of Economic Security Bureau director is among the conditions for continuing to provide financial support to Ukraine.
