Alrosa starts work at Karpinsky-2 pipe in Arkhangelsk Region

MOSCOW. July 8 (Interfax) - Alrosa has begun work at the Karpinsky-2 diamond deposit in Arkhangelsk Region, the Russian diamond miner reported.

This pipe, the third of six kimberlite pipes at the Lomonosov diamond deposit, has reserves in excess of 40 million tonnes of diamond ore.

Commercial mining at the Lomonosov deposit is currently underway at two pipes, Arkhangelskaya and Karpinsky-1.

The first diamonds at Karpinsky-2 were mined in the course of trial work in November 2018, and testing confirmed the commercial potential of the pipe. Preparations for the launch began at the start of 2025.

Severalmaz , Alrosa's subsidiary in Arkhangelsk Region, increased ore processing at its plant by 9.4% in the first five months of 2025, producing over 1.2 million carats of diamonds.

Alrosa announced in the spring that it was temporarily suspending mining of low-margin deposits, specifically alluvial deposits in the Anabar River valley as of April, and at Verkhne-Munskoye in mid-June. The company said the decision would affect operations that accounted for less than 1 million carats or 3% of the overall production target of 29 million carats for 2025.
