KazMunayGas begins green hydrogen production in western Kazakhstan
ALMATY. June 27 (Interfax) - KazMunayGas (KMG) has launched the first phase of a joint project with Kazakh firm Green Spark to produce green hydrogen at the facilities of subsidiary KMG Engineering LLP in Atyrau, western Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company said in a press release.
For the first stage, 336 photovoltaic modules were installed at a company laboratory facility. The solar power plant has a total capacity of 200 kW.
At the second stage, an electrolyzer will be installed. "The solar-generated electricity will power the device, which splits regular water into oxygen and pure hydrogen through electrolysis. This will create a fully self-sufficient cycle from solar power generation to hydrogen production, which will then be used for heating and partially powering the laboratory building," the press release reads.
KMG Engineering LLP is KMG's research and design center, and provides the company with support in technological development, research and engineering across all key operations, from geological exploration and production to hydrocarbon transportation and processing.
KazMunayGas is Kazakhstan's national hydrocarbon exploration, production, processing and transportation company and represents the state's interests in the oil and gas sector.
Green Spark is a high-tech company which develops all-in-one clean energy solutions, purchases electrical materials and offers design services in the oil and gas sector. The company has been active in Kazakhstan since 2017 and has offices in Serbia and Italy.
