SIBUR aims to increase low-carbon product output to 400,000 tonnes per year by 2029, recycle 600,000 tonnes of plastic waste by 2030

MOSCOW. June 3 (Interfax) - SIBUR's new sustainability strategy targets annual production of 400,000 tonnes of low-carbon products containing recycled or bio-based materials by 2029.

In 2024, the company produced 287,000 tonnes of sustainable products, exceeding its previous strategic target of ensuring annual output of at least 250,000 tonnes.

"We have become Russia's first company to incorporate a specific financial target in our ESG strategy - growing revenue from sustainable product sales," the head of sustainability and climate solutions at SIBUR Nadezhda Galaktionova said.

The company plans to facilitate recycling of at least 600,000 tonnes of polymer waste cumulatively for 2025-2029 through its own projects and partnerships. During the previous strategy period, 138,000 tonnes of waste were processed, including 111,000 tonnes in 2024, compared to the previous annual target of 100,000 tonnes).

Among other goals, by 2029 SIBUR intends to develop, implement and scale chemical recycling technologies for mixed plastics (pyrolysis).

In addition, SIBUR aims to achieve carbon neutrality at two of its plants through energy efficiency measures, procurement of green electricity, and carbon credit allocation. As reported, under its previous strategy SIBUR-PETF became Russia's first carbon-neutral plant.

The share of green electricity in SIBUR's energy mix should at least double compared to 2024 levels, while it is planned that specific greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of product will decrease 10% (across facilities existing at the end of 2024).
