Russia in talks to gain access to Indonesian beef market - AgMin
JAKARTA. April 15 (Interfax) - Russia is holding negotiations with Indonesia to start exporting animal products to the Southeast Asian country, foremost beef, Deputy Agriculture Minister Maxim Borovoi told reporters during a visit to Jakarta by a Russian delegation.
The countries are discussing "increasing the volume of animal product supplies, in principal opening [Indonesia's] animal products market, foremost beef," Borovoi said on the sidelines of a meeting of the Russia-Indonesia intergovernmental commission.
Specifically, Russian meat producer Miratorg held negotiations on exports to Indonesia during the visit to the country.
Indonesia currently sets quotas for beef imports, but Russian companies cannot apply for a share of them due to their lack of certification to the country's regulatory standards, Borovoi said. The talks are being held on launching the certification process.
"We hope that the market will open to us and we'll be able to start supplying beef," Borovoi said.
"Our market is big, so we're prepared to meet all the demand there is. But, at the same time, competition here is fairly high, so our colleagues will have to work with their partners," he said when asked about the possible scale of Russian beef exports to Indonesia.
Russia is also discussing exporting poultry meat, dairy products and other animal products to Indonesia.
Wheat currently accounts for 92.3% of Russia's trade in agricultural products with Indonesia, coriander seeds make up 2.6% and frozen fish 2.2%. Bilateral trade in agricultural products between the two countries jumped 41.4% to $1.5 billion in 2024.
