Ukrainian population continues to decrease - Justice Ministry
MOSCOW. Jan 31 (Interfax) - A total of 495,090 deaths were recorded in Ukraine in 2024, this figure exceeded the number of registered births, 176,780, by 2.8 times, Ukrainian media outlets said with a reference to the Justice Ministry's report on the state registration of civil status acts.
The number of births declined by 10,710, or 5.7%, compared to 2023, whereas the number of deaths declined only by 0.2%, or 1,150.
At the same time, dynamics of indicators improved slightly in the second half of 2024, - the number of recorded births increased by 1.6%, reaching 89,020, whereas the number of deaths decreased by 2.7%, to 244,120, the ministry said.
As reported, on September 30, the Ukrainian government endorsed Ukraine's Demographic Development Strategy through 2040 and approved the action plan to implement it in 2024-2027. According to the strategy, the Institute of Demography and Quality of Life Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine estimated that the population in Ukraine could decline to 28.9 million people by 2041 and to 25.2 million people by 2051.
According to the State Statistics Service, the population of Ukraine was 48.5 million people on the date of the All-Ukrainian Census in 2001, and, according to the estimates of the Ptoukha Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the population of Ukraine was 42 million people as of January 1, 2022, and 31.1 million people in the territories controlled by Ukraine as of July 2024, it said.
