On December 15, two tankers, Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239, carrying fuel oil crashed in the Kerch Strait, killing one crewmember. All others were evacuated. The incident led to an oil spill.
The contaminated beach line extended to 54 kilometers.
A check conducted by the Federal Service for Supervision of Transport (Rostransnadzor) found that both vessels were traversing the Kerch Strait in violation of the seasonal navigation restrictions. A number of tankers owned by Volgatransneft were not licensed to carry hazardous cargo by inner water and sea routes, the Transport Ministry said.
Rescuers and volunteers have cleaned up 30,000 tonnes of oil-polluted soil from the Black Sea coast after the accidents. Specialists believe the volumes may eventually grow to 200,000 tonnes.
