USC completes sea trial of Yakutiya nuclear-powered icebreaker

MOSCOW. Dec 13 (Interfax) - Project 22220's all-purpose nuclear-powered icebreaker Yakutiya built by Baltic Shipyard (part of United Shipbuilding Corporation) has completed the sea trial stage, a USC statement said.

"The vessel entered the Gulf of Finland on December 1. Baltic Shipyard specialists, together with the icebreaker crew and contractors' representatives, checked the icebreaker's maneuvering characteristics, the operation of her mechanisms and equipment, automatic, communication and navigation systems, tested the steam turbine engine, electric propulsion systems, shaft lines and deck mechanisms," the statement said.

Upon return the icebreaker moored at the shipyard's berth on Neva River, it said. Very soon the shipyard specialists will finish setting up the vessel's systems and prepare her for delivery to the customer.

The Yakutiya is the fourth (third in the series) Project 22220 ship. She was laid down in May 2020 and floated in November 2022. The icebreaker is due for delivery to FGUP Atomflot before the end of this month.

Project 22220 icebreakers are designed to provide waterways for vessels through the Arctic, sections from the Yenisei river and Gulf of Ob, to tug vessels and other watercraft through ice and over clear water, and for other purposes. The icebreakers have a 60-megawatt capacity.

Baltic Shipyards specializes in building icebreakers and other civilian vessels.

USC was founded by decree of the Russian president in 2007. It is 100% owned by the federal government. Since August 2023 the USC has been in trust management of the VTB bank (MOEX:VTBR).
