Kazakh population up by 189,376 in Jan-Sept 2024- statistics

ASTANA. Nov 12 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan's population stood at 20,223,218 as of October 1, 2024, the National Statistics Bureau of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms said.

"The population totaled 20,223,218 as of October 1, 2024, including 12,704,977 urban residents and 7,518,241 rural residents. The net increase in January-September of the year was 189,376 people," the National Statistics Bureau said in a statement.

There were 278,700 births and 99,500 deaths in Kazakhstan over the reporting period, it said. Thus, natural population growth was 179,200.

A total of 20,383 people arrived in Kazakhstan and 10,201 people left the country in January-September 2024. The net migration rate was 10,182 people.

"Compared to the same period of 2023, the number of arrivals in Kazakhstan increased by 6.5%, while the number of departures declined by 19.9%," the statement said.

Kazakhstan's largest migration exchanges are with other Commonwealth of Independent States members, accounting for 79.7% of all arrivals and 76.9% of all departures, it said.

Internal migration went up 47.4% in January-September 2024 year-on-year. In terms of interregional relocation, four Kazakh regions, such as Astana (52,853 people), Almaty (26,157 people), Shymkent (5,948 people), and the Almaty region (765 people), recorded positive migration balances.
