Turkmenistan drafts roadmap to reduce methane emissions

ASHGABAT. Nov 2 (Interfax) - Turkmenistan has drafted a roadmap and set of measures to achieve the targets of the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov said.

"A draft roadmap has been prepared to strengthen Turkmenistan's international cooperation to implement the goals and objectives set by the GMP for 202502026," Meredov said at a government meeting on Friday, newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan reported.

He said the roadmap confirms the country's goal to reduce methane emissions in the period to 2030 by fundamentally modernizing its energy sector and implementing other measures.

A set of measures to reduce methane emissions are planned for 2025-2026, including scientific and practical conferences, roundtables and seminars with various international organizations, cooperation with foreign companies on achieving objectives in this area, and preparation of feasibility studies for projects to recover and use associated petroleum gas by introducing innovative and energy-saving technologies, among other things.

Meredov said Turkmenistan plans to work with international institutions to carry out the roadmap, including the Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, other specialized UN bodies, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank.

Furthermore, "Turkmenistan attaches a great significance to direct participation in the activity of the digital platform MARS created within the Environment Program of the United Nations," Meredov said.

The draft roadmap and set of measures to implement it have been submitted for review to Turkmenistan's president.
