Borrell asking for new proposals on sanctions against Russian 'shadow fleet'

BRUSSELS. Oct 15 (Interfax) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell believes it is important to step up measures against oil tankers of "Russia's shadow fleet".

"We need more sanctions against the Russian shadow fleet. [...] The number of ships on this shadow fleet that allow Russia to continue exporting oil without being on the limits, the price caps, is increasing," Borrell said at a press conference in Luxembourg on Monday following a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

"We ask for proposal in order to increase the sanctions against these ships," he said.

Sanctions were a separate topic on the meeting's agenda and were addressed while discussing the EU's assistance to Ukraine. The EU states' foreign ministers listened to a report on the matter from EU Special Envoy for Sanctions David O'Sullivan.

In June 2024, the EU added 27 vessels to its 14th package of sanctions against Russia, banning these vessels from EU ports and from using its services. This list includes tankers which Brussels suspects of transporting oil bypassing the set price cap.
