Demand for electric vehicles in Ukraine sees slight decline in Sept 2024 - association

MOSCOW. Oct 10 (Interfax) - The number of new and used electric vehicles registered in Ukraine edged down 0.2% to 4,289 in September 2024 year-on-year, also dropping by one-third compared to August 2024, Ukrainian media outlets cited Ukrautoprom, the national association of motor vehicle manufacturers, as saying in a statement on social media.

As previously reported, demand for electric vehicles, buoyed by rumors about plans to introduce a 15% military tax for car buyers, surged 68% to 6,445 in August 2024 year-on-year.

However, it became known in late August that the Ukrainian government had scrapped that initiative.

According to Ukrautoprom data, the share of new electric vehicles among those registered in September 2024 was 21% versus 18% in September 2023.

The overwhelming majority of the electric vehicles registered last month in Ukraine, 4,157, were cars, including 870 new and 3,287 used ones, and only 13 of the 132 commercial electric vehicles registered in that period were new.

The top-5 most popular brands of new electric vehicles registered in Ukraine in September included Zeekr 001 (109), Volkswagen iD.4 (103), Honda M-NV (102), BYD Song Plus (91), and Nissan Ariya (74).

Last month's five most popular brands of used electric vehicles were Nissan Leaf (440), Tesla Model 3 (325), Tesla Model Y (310), Volkswagen e-Golf (196), and Hyundai Kona (179).

More than 39,900 electric vehicles, 20% of them being new ones and 80% second-hand vehicles, passed initial registration in Ukraine in January-September 2024, which is 65% more than in the same period last year.

As reported, initial registrations of electric vehicles in Ukraine grew 180% to reach 37,600 in 2023 compared to 2022, and the share of new ones among them grew to 20% from 17% a year earlier.
