Armenia, EU intend to liberalize visa regime
YEREVAN. Sept 9 (Interfax) - Armenia and the European Union have begun talks over visa liberalization, for which purpose European Commission Vice President and EU Commissioner for Promoting the European Way of Life Margaritis Schinas has arrived in Yerevan.
At their meeting, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told Schinas that the visit would facilitate the discussion of the cooperation agenda and subsequent development of EU-Armenia interactions, the Armenian government's press service said.
"I am glad of the changes registered in our relations: talks over visa liberalization are beginning, a decision has been made to help Armenia in the framework of the European Peace Facility, which we highly appreciate," Pashinyan said.
Armenia is in fact broadening its agenda with the EU, he said, noting that since his speech in the European Parliament last year, the country has been discussing its potential EU membership.
"This is not an easy matter, but it has become part of Armenia's political agenda, which is why this topic should be approached thoroughly and comprehensively. It will be important to hear observations and advice on this from our EU partners," Pashinyan said.
Also, the European civilian mission in Armenia is doing an important job in the context of regional peace and stability, he said.
The EU is keen to develop relations with Armenia, help advance its reforms, Schinas said.
Hopefully, the cooperation with Armenia's government proves effective in the framework of the visa liberalization dialogue, he said.
