Feasibility study for first of three thermal power plants to be built with Russia ready, work to begin in 2024 - Kazakh energy minister

ASTANA. July 18 (Interfax) - A feasibility study for the first of three coal-fired thermal power plants to be built in Kazakhstan by Russia's Inter RAO and Kazakhstan's Samruk-Energo is now ready, with construction due to begin before the end of this year, Kazakh Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev said.

Kazakhstan plans to build three thermal power plants jointly with Russia in the cities of Kokshetau (240 MW), Semey (360 MW) and Ust-Kamenogorsk (360 MW). Inter RAO is involved in the projects. The company will manage projects, acting as general contractor.

"The feasibility study has already been completed for [the TPP in] Kokshetau, its review and acceptance is being finalized. This year the created joint ventures will start developing design specifications and estimates, simultaneously with site preparation for construction. We expect the start of construction work this year," Satkaliyev told reporters.

A feasibility study for the TPP in Semey should be ready by the end of 2024, Satlakiyev said. Work on a study for the Ust-Kamenogorsk plant has yet to begun.

"Nevertheless, the deadlines are quite strict, we expect the completion of all three projects in 2028," the minister said.
