Ukraine sends another shipment of flour to Sudan under Grain From Ukraine initiative

MOSCOW. March 29 (Interfax) - Ukraine has delivered a second shipment of humanitarian aid to Sudan under Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's Grain From Ukraine initiative with the World Food Organization's support, Ukrainian media reported referring to the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry.

The MV Future ID vessel carrying 14,600 tonnes of flour made from Ukrainian wheat has arrived in Sudan, it said. The flour will be distributed in food packages among 2 million people affected by the war in Sudan, it said.

"Nearly 18 million people in Sudan are currently experiencing a dire food shortage. About 5 million of them, according to UN estimates, are in Phase 4 (emergency) on the IPC [Integrated Food Security Phase Classification] scale. The harvest of the key grain crops, such as sorghum, millet, and wheat, is 41% below the five-year average. Therefore, food support under the Grain From Ukraine initiative is extremely important for saving lives and preventing the situation from worsening even more," the ministry said.

As reported earlier, the MV Ocean Dream vessel delivered the first shipment of 7,665 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat flour to Port Sudan on February 22, 2024.

The deliveries of the two shipments were funded by Germany, which donated $15 million, as well as Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, Slovenia, and Spain, which provided $23.8 million for the delivery of the second shipment.
