Interfax is most cited Russian information agency in foreign and Russian press - 2013 figures

Interfax continues to be the most cited Russian information agency in the leading foreign and Russian press in 2013, the Factiva international press and SCAN databases show. The Factiva archive includes thousands of leading news and business sources from 200 countries and the SCAN database contains around 14,000 sources.

The ranking for citations in the international press of the three top Russian information agencies (Interfax, RIA Novosti and ITAR TASS) in 2013 include the following categories:

- Major international information agencies: Reuters, Dow Jones, AFP, DPA, EFE, ANSA, Xinhua

- BBC radio stations

- US Newspapers

- UK Newspapers

- German press (excluding information agencies)

- French press (excluding information agencies)

Research on citations in the Russian press were based on SCAN.

The ranking was compiled according to the following categories:

- All Russian press (4,149 sources represented in the SCAN system). To ensure data objectivity and accuracy, citations in the agencies‘ own publications were excluded. In addition, the search also excluded blogs, internet resources and media monitoring.

- Central and federal printed press in Russia (the 485 most authoritative newspapers and magazines)

- Federal mass media (there were 227 sources including Channel One, Rossiya television channel, NTV, Ren-TV, TVC, Russia Radio, Mayak Radio, Voice of Russia Radio, Ekho Moskvy Radio, Russian News Service Radio, Radio Vesti-FM, Radio City-FM, Radio Kommersant-FM and others)

- Regional printed publications in the most densely populated Russian regions (Bashkortostan, Volgograd region, Voronezh region, Irkutsk region, Kemerovo region, Krasnodar territory, Krasnoyarsk territory, Nizhny Novgorod region, Novosibirsk region, Perm territory, Primorye territory, Rostov region, Samara region, St. Petersburg, Saratov region, Sverdlovsk region, Tatarstan, Khabarovsk territory, Chelyabinsk region; total - 1196 sources).

International Press

Interfax topped the ranking for the most cited of the three leading Russian information agencies in the international press, compiled from an analysis of foreign press publications from the Factiva archive.

In the major international information agency category, Interfax achieved the highest number of citations in all agencies and sources.

The Factiva archive shows that US papers cited Interfax 872 times between January 1 2013 and December 31 2013. They cited RIA Novosti 578 times and ITAR TASS 227 times.

UK papers cited Interfax 573 times, RIA Novosti 301 times and ITAR TASS 161 times.

The German press, excluding information agencies, cited Interfax 2,380 times, ITAR TASS 507 times and RIA Novosti 170 times.

The French press, with the exception of information agencies, cited Interfax 618 times in 2013, RIA Novosti - 323 times and ITAR TASS - 235 times.
