Radiation, chemical hazard warning broadcast in Tver region by mistake
TVER. May 8 (Interfax) - The Tver region's television channels and radio stations broadcast reports on chemical hazard on Wednesday, it was caused by a technical glitch, the press service for the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's main department for the region said.
"Due to technical activities of the transmission network of the branch of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise RTRS, the Tver Regional Radio and Television Transmission Center, regional media published information about civil defense signals. Background radiation in the Tver region is normal," the press service said.
The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's main department for the Tver region is monitoring the situation.
According to the measurements of the Tver Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, radiation levels have not been exceeded in the Tver region on May 8, it said.
The Tver Regional Radio and Television Transmission Center told Interfax that the warning of radiation hazard was broadcast due to a technical glitch.
"The broadcast of the warning on all channels of the first and second multiplexor in the Tver region was caused by a technical glitch," it said.
According to local media, in the afternoon, television channels broadcast first radiation and subsequently chemical hazard alarms in the Tver region. Citizens were advised to turn off electricity, water and gas, pack a bug-out bag, close windows and turn air extraction systems off, hide in a shelter, and prepare personal protective equipment.
