Azerbaijani leader accuses opposition of wrecking country, unleashing civil war
BAKU. May 11 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has accused the opposition of smearing national processes.
"Once again, stability is well protected in Azerbaijan," Aliyev said at a ceremony dedicated to the 96th birth anniversary of late President Heydar Aliyev and the 15th anniversary of the same-name foundation.
Still, "certain groups, which led Azerbaijan to a disastrous condition in the 1990s and suffered a complete fiasco, are again trying to achieve something," he said.
"Their tools are lies, slander, and conjectures. They have no other methods; they are smearing our country using media outlets. They are trying to create an ugly image inside and outside the country," Aliyev said.
"It was them who led Azerbaijan to a deplorable condition, wrecked our country, started the civil war, and spilled blood of our brothers. The people of Azerbaijan will never allow anti-national traitors to achieve anything in Azerbaijan. The people of Azerbaijan are wise and know everything," he said.
Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan's commitment to reforms. "We will carry on our reforms. Once again, I believe that the results we have achieved must go down in history. We must know how we started and what we accomplished," Aliyev said.
