Police report detention of further 70 protesters against Yekaterinburg church construction

YEKATERINBURG. May 16 (Interfax) - Seventy people have been detained at an unauthorized rally protesting the construction of a church on an embankment in central Yekaterinburg on Wednesday evening, press secretary of the Russian Interior Ministry's Main Directorate for the Sverdlovsk region Valery Gorelykh, said.

"Seventy people, including three minors, have been detained," Gorelykh said.

A total of 102 protocols have been made against 98 people over several days of protesting.

Protests against the plans to build the Church of St. Catherine on Yekaterinburg's Oktyabrskaya Square have been held in Yekaterinburg since May 13. Rallies conducted near the fence erected on the construction site are being dispersed by the police. A number of protesters are being detained and further arrested.
