Issue of ban on adopting Russian children should not be blown out of proportion - Peskov

MOSCOW. Jan 11 (Interfax) - The Russian president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov has said he is not aware of any initiative allegedly put forth by the United Russia Party to ban citizens of all foreign countries from adopting Russian children.

Peskov advised against blowing the adoption ban topic out of proportion.

"It is the first time I have heard about it. I do not know how it can be explained. One should not blow any issues out of proportion. Rather, one should try to make sure that there are no orphans at all. But I am not familiar with this initiative," Peskov told the Dozhd television station.

United Russia member Yevgeny Fyodorov was quoted by news reports as saying that parliamentarians planned to seek an overall ban on adoption of Russian children by foreigners and were drafting an appropriate bill.

The Ekho Moskvy radio station said, referring to Fyodorov, that today Russian deputies plan to allow only families from France and Italy, which have appropriate agreements with Russia, to adopt Russian children.
