Sakhalin rivers full of salmon, specialists fear fish may die
YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. Aug 6 (Interfax) - Some of the Pacific salmon spawning in Sakhalin rivers may die, Sakhalinrybvod federal unitary enterprise head Vladimir Samarsky told Interfax.
Bakhura and Anna Rivers in the Dolinsk district are packed with fish. They are 150% full, he said.
"More fish is coming. Fish feels all right as long as air and water temperatures are low and water is rich in oxygen. Yet fish may die if temperatures go up," he said. Nine more rivers are full of fish in southern and northeastern Sakhalin. Specialists are constantly monitoring the condition of spawning fish.
Most of the fish are male salmon. Specialists say the rivers are in serious danger. The salmon migration will continue until early September.
"Arrivals of Pacific salmon have just begun, but there is no place for spawning in these rivers already. If water temperature goes up, lots of fish may die," the Sakhalin and Kuril department of the Federal Fisheries Agency told Interfax.
